How PDF zone extraction works
Every PDF has a text layer — an invisible copy of every character with its exact position on the page, measured in points (1/72"). When you draw a rectangle over a title block, this tool converts your rectangle into a page-space bounding box and collects every text fragment that falls inside.
Coordinates are stored as fractions of the page (0.0 on the left, 1.0 on the right), so the same zone template works on any sheet size — you define once, extract anywhere. That's also how the full Foreman product handles multi-size sheet sets: one zone template, auto-positioned for A0, A1, or A3 via anchors.
Typical title block fields to extract
What this tool won't do
- Scanned PDFs. If the PDF is an image (no text layer — think scanned paper drawings), this tool returns blank values. OCR is available in the full Foreman product, across 15 languages.
- Rotated zones. Some title blocks run sideways. This tool assumes upright zones. The full product supports 90° / 180° / 270° rotated zones.
- Multi-page sheets. Only page 1 is shown. For multi-page batching, use the full product.
- Automatic detection. You draw the zones manually. The product can auto-detect title blocks across a whole sheet set and align zones by common anchors.
What teams automate next in Foreman: keep these title-block checks running automatically, enforce required metadata in Forma (ACC), and schedule daily QA runs so non-compliant files are caught before submission packs go out.
Privacy. Your PDF is streamed through our server for parsing and discarded the moment the response is sent. Nothing persists to disk, no logs contain file contents, and the extracted text is returned only to you.
